Cataract Surgical Rate in Korea from 2002 to 2013

Abstract
Purpose: To estimate the cataract surgical rate (CSR) in Korea using Korean National Health Insurance Service database.

Methods: National Health Insurance Review and Assessment databases were used to identify all incident cataract surgeries in Korea, between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2013. The number of patients who underwent cataract surgery for one year was divided by the national population number from the Korean Statistical Information Service was defined as CSR.

Results: Between 2002 and 2013, the total number of operated eyes per millions per year increased, from 2,629 to 6,570.

Conclusions: This study documented the incidence and trends in cataract surgery in the overall population in Korea. During 2002-2013, CSR in Korea have doubled over the past decade.
